Dr Cat StEvens
Dr Cat StEvens (PhD, MTeach, BA (Hons)) is an artist, teacher, and researcher for the University of Tasmania. Originally from the green belt of Southeast England, Cat moved to Tasmania 10 years ago after following a childhood dream, and immediately felt like her soul had arrived home.
Cat’s art practice mostly involves working with oil and acrylic paints, sculpture, and assemblage, and she is currently working on a sculptural series which also uses light as a medium. Cat’s artwork is usually confrontational and motivated by social justice, and she has recently exhibited works at Poimena Gallery, Sawtooth ARI, and in the Art for Change exhibition as part of the UN's 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
As a researcher, Cat’s focus is education, autism advocacy, and social justice. Cat conducted the first of its kind research exploring autistic teachers in Australia, in an autistic-led study. Cat is passionate about supporting community, not capitalism, and has been an active member of many community-based organisations such as Friends of Fernglade, Havenview 2020, Live Well Tasmania, and School Strike for Climate Action.
Cat is the current interim gallery manager of Sawtooth ARI.
