SAW: Sawtooth Artist Workshops - Canvas Stretching with Tony Curran

Learn how to stretch a canvas! Tony Curran will take visitors through the process of stretching a raw canvas over a frame. Using the method that he uses to prepare his own canvases for painting and exhibition, participants will learn about stretcher bars, different types of canvas, how to hold canvas pliers and how to correct any mistakes along the way.

Tony Curran is an artist based in Launceston in Lutruwita. He works across painting and digital media creating drawing upon the traditions of gestural abstraction and graphical user-interfaces. Tony is also the Head of Art at the University of Tasmania in the School of Creative Arts and Media.

Mae Finlayson is a visual artist living in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. She makes soft sculpture, embroidery, fabric prints and collage with a hand made aesthetic blending ordinary materials in unusual ways. She has a BA with 1st class Honours from Goldsmiths’ College, University of London and a Masters of Constructed Textiles from the Royal College of Art, London. While making work for gallery exhibition and outdoor festivals, Mae has worked on many collaborative, community and solo projects often specialising in projects driven by audience participation.
