My textile designs often depict marina shell and woven baskets. By using these images I create opportunities for me to speak to our continuing cultural practices and their importance to the pakana people. With my shell designs, I always highlight the diminishing amount of marina shells, particularly the green marina. The shells will eventually become extinct due to the warming of the oceans and seas, in turn killing our kelp forests and the sources of food that the marina’s live on.”

Bonnie Starick is a pakana woman of the Trawlwoolway nation from the Country of Trebrakunna. Her blood lines come from a long line of strong women; Grandmothers Emmerenna, Wathikawitja and Elizabeth Maynard.

Bonnie has completed a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts and has a strong passion for First Nations arts and culture. She takes pride in creating and supporting every opportunity to give back to her Community, through the arts, cultural practices and education.

Bonnie shares her knowledge with Community through First Nations exhibitions, including exhibitions at Nayri Niara, Rant Arts and the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair. Alongside this, Bonnie is a culturally inspired artist who enjoys many art forms with a strong passion for photography, textile design and Indigenous fashions.
