“This painting depicts a scene along the C132 road from Moina to Middlesex, approaching the Iris River Bridge. Typically, images of the Tasmanian landscape evoke picturesque scenes that are calm, serene, and beautiful. However, my travels throughout the state often reveal the wild and occasionally unforgiving aspects of nature. During a particular journey to the west coast, an approaching storm presented a menacing appearance. It felt as though one was traveling towards an unknown destination, akin to the road to perdition. Historically, "perdition" originated as a term meaning "utter destruction". In light of current global events, it raises contemplation on whether society is similarly advancing blindly along the metaphorical road to perdition.”

Artist Biography – Stephen Yates
After taking early retirement from corporate life, Stephen is now dedicating more time to his lifelong passion for painting. He is primarily self-taught and has always enjoyed painting, though other commitments often impeded his progress. Stephen has a particular affinity for pastels, a medium he discovered during art workshops in the 1990s. Additionally, he enjoys using acrylics, which he finds ideal for creating expressive and emotive works. Over the past few years, Stephen has completed numerous commissions, ranging from abstract acrylic pieces to Tasmanian landscapes in pastels.

Stephen was a finalist in the 2020 Glover Landscape Art Award and has participated in various exhibitions throughout the years. His techniques have been honed through participation in multiple workshops. Embracing the learning process, Stephen continues to refine his skills, using his experiences to enhance his work. In 2022, Stephen held a solo exhibition titled “Liquorice All Sorts” and subsequently participated in a 2023 exhibition titled “Out of the Shadows.”
