“A friend to worry enough for the both of you. Intended to be carried in your pocket, a point of grounding in this crazy world. The surface of their skin wiped back at birth to reveal a tactile texture to channel your restless energy into. Shaped by my hands as a way of moving through my own anxieties.”
Cedar Butcher is a queer emerging multidisciplinary artist based in the banks of kanamaluka, lutruwita and is currently completing their Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Tasmania. Their practice seeks to embody radical joy and whimsy in an oversaturated culture of doom, utilising play as a means to foster childlike wonder. Through an iterative methodology that engages ceramics, walking, field recording, drawing and printmaking, they seek to develop a circular dialogue with place and self of celebration and healing.
Growing up on Bundjalung country in New South Wales allowed their relationship and deep appreciation for the environments they occupy to flourish. The flooding of the Wilson River in 2022 saw their hometown and community of Lismore devastated; this natural disaster deeply impacts and informs all they do.
