"Resonance #1 explores the layered nature of memory and emotion through atmospheric blends of magenta, deep purple, and cobalt blue. My aim was to create rganic textures using brushstrokes to flow across the composition, suggesting movement and depth. The white outline of a single flower floats above the chaos, hoping to evoke a sense of calm among complexity. This contrast between, abstract marks and the fine floral form invites viewers to pause and reflect on the quieter moments that exist within emotional turmoil within the world. My themes are growth, fragility, and resilience, to encourage personal interpretation.”

Julie McDonald (Newcastle, NSW) is a visual artist now based in Tasmania who works across painting, drawing, and sculpture. She employs materials like inks, acrylics, charcoal, oil sticks, and assembled sculptural forms using wood, found objects, paper, and canvas. Her distinctive visual language centres on the Inner Female Space, thoughtfully expressed through symbolic and metaphorical imagery that delves into themes of cultural identity, resilience, and personal reinvention.

Among her significant projects are The Uterus Collection and Unfolding Women, both of which grew from her artist residency at Quamby Estate and emerge from personal and shared narratives. Julie has exhibited widely in Australia, including solo and group shows at Poimena Art Gallery (Launceston), Working Dog Gallery (Sydney), Waterline Art Gallery (Ettalong), and Gosford Regional Gallery, and has earned multiple awards such as two Judge’s Choice distinctions at Art Trails Tasmania (2024).

She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours, 2022–2023) from the University of Tasmania, plus a Graduate Diploma in Education (Art) and a Bachelor of Visual Communication (Art) from the University of Newcastle.
